On October 2, 1954 Purdue sophomore QB Len Dawson passed for four touchdowns as the #19 Boilermakers defeated the #1 ranked Irish in South Bend by a score of 27-14.

Dawson became the 1954 NCAA Passing Touchdowns Champion with 15 TDs on the season. He also led the nation in passing efficiency with a 145.8 rating.
