The tradition was started by Juanita Carpenter in 1954. The original costume is on display with other historical artifacts such as the Rose Parade banner carried by Big Ten bands, Knute Rockne's sweatshirt, Joe Montana's soup bowl, and Ron Dayne's shoes at the College Football Hall of Fame Museum located in South Bend, Indiana.
