The Rose Bowl games explanation. In the 1960's there was a rule that didn't allow Big Ten teams to go to the Rose Bowl game in consecutive years. Michigan State won the Big Ten in 1965 and 1966. The Boilermakers finished 2nd in the Big Ten in 1966 and represented the conference at the 1967 Rose Bowl. Consequently, when Purdue finished 1st in 1967 they were not eligible for a repeat visit.
Additional Championships. Prior to joining the Big Ten Conference, as a charter member, the Boilermakers won four Indiana Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships: 1891, 1892, 1893, 1894.
