Weather Conditions: cloudy, occasional showers; temperature 67; wind SW 6-12 mph. The 4th quarter. Purdue's ability to put some points on the scoreboard and keep Penn State from scoring gave the Boilermakers a huge Big Ten road win. With the Boilers holding a 17-13 lead, QB Kyle Orton was intercepted for the first time of the 2004 season on the first play of the 4th quarter. The Penn St. offense drove to the Purdue 6 yardline. Boiler CB Paul Long broke up a Lion endzone pass on 3rd and 5. Penn St. lined up for a fieldgoal attempt on 4th down and ran a fake. The Purdue defense stuffed the fake and a Penn State scoring opportunity on the 3 yardline.
On Purdue's third offensive play after regaining possession lightening struck again as Orton threw his second interception of the game. The Penn St. offensive drive was limited to 14 yards in 7 plays with big defensive plays coming from Paul Long and Brian Hickman. Long contributed a 6-yard sack and Hickman added a pass breakup on 3rd down. A 45-yard Penn St. fieldgoal attempt missed. Purdue drove 44 yards and stalled at the Penn St. 28 yardline. Kicker Ben Jones stretched Purdue's lead to 20-13 by adding a 46-yard fieldgoal. Penn State was unable to move the ball into scoring range in the remaining 02:36 and the young Boilermaker defense suddenly didn't look so young. Ben Jones was selected Big Ten Special Teams Player of the week as Purdue completed a 3 game road trip 3-0.
